Episode 5- This Place Is Death

great episode. love jin. love how much time traveling helped his english and loved how happy sawyer was to see him. anyway i'm posting this blog which is more questions than theories. i'm sorry it's not the best blog. i'm jet lagged and have major foot pain. i'll write more tomorrow. xoxo

- nadine- looked like a young eloise. thought robert (rousseau's man) looked a bit like farraday.

- frenchie lacombe -Albert Lacombe (28 February 182712 December 1916), commonly known in Alberta simply as Father Lacombe, was a French-Canadian Roman Catholic missionary who lived among and evangelized the Cree and Blackfoot First Nations of western Canada. blackrock/big foot statue!

- this is what happens when you bring a woman here- they chase butterflies. why would they bring a pregnant woman then?

- dude that lost his arm from black smoke. dr candle lost his arm! and whidmore threatened to cut off juliette's hand. these are star wars references! there's a GREAT lost as star wars story here: http://abc.go.com/primetime/lost/index?pn=mb&cat=33026&tid=564413

- the black monster is a security system for the temple.

- did anyone notice jin had a red star on his shirt.. hope he's not marked!

- didn't kate have a music box?

- how does charlotte speaks korean- did she learn it from her time at the island- perhaps dr. candle?

- there are so many opps for people to kill ben but no one ever does!

-Charlotte remarks that she knows more about Carthage than Hannibal. Hannibal was a war general from Carthage from around 200 BC. He is considered on of the greatest military commander and tactician through out all of history.

- is charlotte annie or is annie charlotte's mom? who is the american man her mother married?

- was locke on the island on another time.. how does he know how everything always works and what the sacrifices are.

-wouldn't locke having jin's ring be more obvious that he's alive.. wouldn't they have buried him with his ring.

- charlotte's mumblings were from her childhood (chocolate- apollo bar, her dad).

- John has repeatedly stated that Boone was the sacrifice the island demanded, but in leaving the island and eventually dying to bring the others back John becomes a sacrifice to the island.

- Ben was surprised Desmond was looking for Farraday.

- the statue at the church was the statue of the resurrection (Christ/Locke)- jesus sacrificed himself for the people.

- charlotte translates don't come back- she's talking about ji yeon- sun & jin's daughter. coming back to the island is bad- this place is death and the more time you spend the more prone you are to the sickness. because you experience time shifts you are more destined to die because you spent the most time there. this is why claire also tells kate in a dream not to bring back aaron.

- is the island death? people who die don't really die (will we see chaly again?) they lied about everyone's death from the plane crash and you may have to die to get back on the island and once you leave the regular world people are dead. is ben dead.. he doesn't interact with anyone except for a few people.

ok. again more tomorrow.

Christian Shephard likely refers to the idea of the "Good Shepherd" in Christianity thought and imagery, and Jesus Christ specifically.

A widespread title for Jesus, "The Good Shepherd" is an idea based upon passages from both the New Testament and the Hebrew Bible (aka Old Testament). Such passages use the image of a shepherd gently protecting and guiding his flock as a metaphor for God's relationship to believers. The most prominent use of this image in the New Testament is Jesus' parable of the "lost sheep" (Luke 15; Matthew 18): God is like a shepherd who tirelessly searches for one lost sheep out of 100, and rejoices once it is found (or "saved"). Language referring to God as a shepherd also is found in the Hebrew Bible, such as Ezekiel 34 or Psalm 23, with the famous beginning "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." This psalm often is read at funerals, as it also contains the lines, "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me." (The last line is a reference to the shepherd's traditional staff or "crook.") Mr. Eko recites the 23rd psalm when he cremates the remains of his brother Yemi in season 2: that episode is titled The 23rd Psalm. In early Christian art, Jesus very often was depicted as a shepherd.

The metaphor of a shepherd caring for his flock also is used more generally in Christian tradition for religious leaders and their congregants. In fact, the word "pastor" means "shepherd" in Latin, just as "congregation" means "a flock gathered together". For this reason, the name Christian Shephard need not refer narrowly and specifically to Jesus, but rather to a more general symbol for the character's mysterious function as a spiritual guide and informant from the beyond. However, there have been multiple occurrences in the series, and an episode from Season 1 specifically, that could be used as evidence to prove that Christian does in fact represent Jesus Christ specifically, rather than just a general spiritual guide.

In the episode "White Rabbit," Christian's death, mysteriously empty coffin, and subsequent reappearance to Jack are all clear references to Chapter 16 of the Book of Mark, specifically verse 8. Mark is the oldest of the 4 Gospels, and Chapter 16 is the final chapter. In it, Mary Magdalene & Mary, Jesus' mother, go to Jesus' tomb to anoint His body. When they arrive, they find that the large stone placed to block the tomb's entrance has been moved. They enter the tomb and find a man, assumed to be an angel, dressed in a white robe. The man in white tells them that Jesus has been resurrected and that they should go and tell the disciples He has gone ahead of them and will meet them in Galilee, just as He had prophesied. However, the women go away frightened, initially saying nothing to anyone. Jack's reaction to seeing his father is similar to that of Mary & Mary Magdalene. Lacking the faith to believe what he has seen, Jack never tells anyone of his visions, or even of the fact that his father's coffin was empty. It may also be important to note that the oldest known versions of the Book of Mark, and other ancient witness accounts of the Gospel, do not have verses 9-20, making verse 8 the Book of Mark's original ending. While we can't be sure of anything until a canonical source confirms it, in light of this episode and evidence, it is hard to think that Christian Shephard's name refers to anything or anyone else other than Christ.

I noticed in this episode that when the father of rousseau's (sp) baby tried to kill her, the gun did not go off. This also happened when Michael tried to kill himself. Perhaps Rousseau is another person who the island will not allow to die? We don't know for sure that she is dead from the crazy military men. Also, she did survive somehow for 16 years on the island....

Geronimo Jackson:
The album title Magna Carta is an anagram of "anagram act".

Charlie's middle name, Hieronymus, means "sacred name" in Ancient Greek, and is a variant of the name "Geronimo".

The surnames of the two directors of Disney's Alice in Wonderland are Geronimi and Jackson...

The Magna Carta (1215) is widely viewed as one of the most important legal documents in the history of democracy.

Sigmund Freud & the Oceanic feeling -
In Chapter I of his book, Civilization and Its Discontents, Sigmund Freud discusses a letter he received from his friend, the French novelist and mystic Romain Rolland. In this letter, Rolland describes what he calls the "Oceanic" feeling - that is, a feeling of eternity, a deep and innate connection with all things, a "oneness" with the world. Rolland, a "man of faith," sees this "Oceanic" feeling as being the primal source of all religion, but itself independent of any particular religion. Freud, an atheist and avowed "man of science" disagrees. While he admits that many people may experience this "Oceanic" feeling, he locates its source not in some mystical feeling of connection, but in an infantile helplessness experienced when confronted with a hostile world and the subsequent longing for the protection and guidance of the father. For Freud, this "Oceanic" feeling is "sustained by fear of the superior power of Fate."
